A post worth reading

Five+ Ways Being Transgender in Fandom Really Sucks, and Why I Stick With It Anyway: how not to fail re. genderswitch fics.

Some things I'd like to share

I'm having my first sick day in six months today. Having successfully evaded Paz's cold for the duration of the Easter weekend, I returned to a freezing cold office at work, which gave the bugs the opportunity to catch me. *sniffle* Sudafed and lemsips are my friends today, and I now have time to do a little tab clearance and circle maintenance.

So, Thing the First: [personal profile] auburn recently requested prompts for a timestamp meme. And she wrote this snippet from the end of In the City of Seven Walls which remains my favourite SGA fic ever. I recommend you read the other snippets in the meme while you're there.

Thing the Second was found via [community profile] metafandom and is The Broccoli Test. The degree to which John and Rodney passed this test would depend very much on who was writing them, I suspect. Sometimes they just totally get each other and sometimes they... don't. Let me know if you have a take on this.

Thing the Third is a fic by [personal profile] darkrose which makes my geeky heart happy: We Sang in Tune. My main geeky timesink, Raelynne, is a Fury, which is part-healer, part-nuker. Guess which bit I enjoy more. (I just have to pause for a moment to brag about the fact that I was 3rd Fury on my server to level 90. Thank you for your time.)

Thing the Fourth is my current favourite LoLcat:

cut for those who are not LoLcats fans )

Lastly, a question: I've seen the phrase, "a lack of spoons" around the internets a lot recently. While I understand what it means from context, I have no idea where it came from or why spoons in particular. I think it's a phrase I could apply to myself some days, but I am unwilling to do so without understanding its origins. Any insights, flist?

Can't. Make. Decision. HELP!

On the one hand, SGA Big Bang is live, and I have a burning need to start reading [info - personal] telesilla's, [info - personal] sabinetzin's and [info - personal] auburn's fics all at once.

On the other hand, there's 20% bonus Achievement Award on EQ2 this weekend and, while Raelynne is fully capped out and ready for the next expansion, I really need to be levelling my shadowknight, Sentai. And of course, I have my shiny new RAM to give everything Go Faster Stripes.

On the third hand (or maybe a prehensile tail), I've finally ported my RL journal to DW. But I now need to devise a tagging system that will work for that journal and this one (since I intend to crosspost) and then retag 6 years of entries.

So, a poll to help me decide )

The first thing I am going to do is get dressed. It is technically the afternoon now, and I should not still be lounging in my scruffy dressing gown. Then, maybe a bacon muffin for lunch...

SGA rec

I've been off work with evil head-cold of evilness since Thursday. This has conveniently given me time to read through a series of mad epic!fics. I present to you Xanthe's stories General & Dr Sheppard, Coming Home and Hiding in Plain Sight, the last of which is a crossover with NCIS.

I strongly recommend you read the author's notes first; the concept for this AU is cracked (and won't be to everyone's taste) but the stories are still a lot of fun. They follow the romance formula of denial, angst, danger and happy-ever-after which makes them perfect comfort-fic for a cold winter or sick-leave.

I should also warn you that the third fic is seriously colouring my view of NCIS... but kind in a good way ;)

Let me know if you like these stories, and don't forget to leave comments for [info]xanthestories.

Birthday fic!

Huge thanks to [info]enchanted-jae who wrote me a birthday SGA drabble, her first foray in the fandom. She is made of win!

Also, I have been on IJ for well over a year now, but I have yet to learn how to do that thing where the LJ blue username icon shows up instead of the orange IJ one. Anyone want to help (lazy) me out and tell me how?

I am not a happy bunny!

Thanks to [info]azurehart for the news; see her post here for further contact details. I intend to spam the hell out of the Sci-Fi channel.

Now I'm going to hug my dvds and cry :(

Hello, new friends!

[info]atlantisslash is having a friending meme, so I added my comment and pretty much friended everyone else. *waves*

I am totally blaming [info]auburnnothenna for my lack of time to post right now, as I am addicted to her 200,000 word epic SGA Big Bang fic, and cannot tear myself away.

For any of my flist who are a) Brits and b) as hooked on Stargate Atlantis as I am, HMV are taking pre-orders for Season 4 for £28.99. So I've just pre-ordered Season 4 when I haven't even bought Season 3 (which is hovering around the £50 mark). Silly, but true :)

Comfort fic

[info]pir8fancier asked for Crap Day Antidotes. I present...

Catch 19 by chelle. It's SGA, McShep, and fluff. NC-17 fluff. If you've had a bad day, really, this is what you need.

Also, I managed to miss out on sensibly-priced permanent accounts here. I was sure they were staying on offer til the end of May... Oh well, this one is already permanent. I'll just have to be minimalist with my RL account. *le sigh*

Epic SGA rec

I spent Monday and Tuesday off sick, so it was convenient that I'd discovered In the City of Seven Walls by Auburn the day before, via Necromancy for the Living, an alternative PoV for the story written by Icarus.

In the City of Seven Walls, with the additional PoV stories, comes to about 190,000 words of the most beautiful, heart-wrenching, powerful, vivid storytelling I've read in a long time. This story made me feel an amazing range of emotions, including hope and despair. I've spent most of the last two days thinking about it.

It's a slavery fic, and bits of it really ain't pretty, so you have been warned. But it is soooooo worth it. I think I'll be reading it again this weekend.

SGA McShep recs

Many thanks to [info]seleneheart for reccing Written By The Victors by written by Speranza. It's very long, and it takes a little while to get used to the style, but trust me, it is worth it! Sixteen pages of comments can't be wrong.

On a totally different note, we have The Schedule, which is (a comparatively short) 8000 words of amusing, sweet and very hot smut.

Go forth and read...
